I want my organization to join to eduroam

If you are a higher education or research organization, joining an initiative such as eduroam will make life much easier for both the organization's users and administrators.

eduroam is made up of thousands of institutions worldwide, so users will not only benefit from connectivity within their own organization. They will also benefit from connectivity in thousands of locations in this area at national and international level.

At the same time, the ability to offer connectivity to visiting users is greatly facilitated by offering them a mechanism equivalent to that offered at their home organization, and delegating support to their own organization.

Check the eligibility requirements, and contact us with more details about your organization.

In addition, connectivity can be offered to the wider eduroam community in public places, in hospitals, or in transport. We better explain below these use cases for organizations outside the academic and scientific environment that want to join the initiative, extending the footprint of their networks to eduroam users.

eduroamers can also enjoy connectivity in places such as airports or train stations. At the international level, eduroam participates through the GÉANT academic network association in the international Open Roaming initiative, promoted by entities such as the Wi-Fi Alliance.

If you represent a transport operator or administrator of passenger transport infrastructure that offers free Wi-Fi, and you want to have immediate access to a community as large as the university and scientific community, please contact us and we will be happy to hear from you.

eduroam in healthcare institutions

Many hospitals and healthcare institutions already have eduroam. Especially in the case of university hospitals, eduroam facilitates the mobility of teachers and students throughout the facilities, allowing them to access the information they need wherever they are. Several regional health services, including those of Galicia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and La Rioja, or the Valencian Hospital network, through the Generalitat, offer eduroam connectivity in their facilities.

If your organization does not yet participate in the initiative and you want your users to benefit from eduroam, please contact us explaining your case.

Users of the academic and scientific community already have a configuration that allows instant and secure authentication with the credentials provided by their organization, so there are many initiatives that allow them to connect to eduroam in public places where the eduroam signal is broadcasted.

Directly or through organizations affiliated with RedIRIS, we can expose several initiatives in the Basque Country (through its regional network I2Basque), Castilla - La Mancha (thanks to the University of Castilla - La Mancha), or the Valencian Community where users of the wide eduroam community benefit from connectivity in public places.

IdP and SP

There are two types of eduroam providers, these are Identity Provider and Service Provider. Institutions, in general, act like both.

As a Service Provider, your organization offers eduroam on-premise allowing users to connect to its network and have Internet automatically. As an Identity Provider, you will be able to maintain eduroam accounts that can be used in all other organizations that act as a Service Provider.

Service Provider

Virtually any organization can be a Service Provider. Educational institutions are called upon to do so so that their users (students, teachers, etc.) can access all the benefits of eduroam on-premise. Other organizations can also become an Identity Provider since for students, having eduroam connectivity is a great advantage.

To become a Service Provider, the organization must register on the national RADIUS server that is subject to the national eduroam policy. Additionally, service providers must communicate to RedIRIS a list of their locations where the service is available. Each Service Provider is responsible for the infrastructure with which eduroam provides, giving RedIRIS limited assistance as long as it has access to the resources that make it possible.

Identity Provider

Only Spanish organizations that are members of RedIRIS may act as Identity Providers in the Spanish eduroam realm.
